Useful information on trail riding

Two kinds of trail rides are well-known. One of them is called the “classic trail ride” which moves on every day from one station to the other, and it lasts for some days or for several weeks. The distance covered is about 30-50 kilometres a day. The other type lasts for about the same time, covers about the same distance and needs similar riding abilities. This centre is based one what is called “star trail ride” where riders start from and arrive at the same spot for several days.

Riding skills

Trail riding is for the more experienced riders who have reliable, solid riding skills and stamina. In terms of a good riding skill it is a must that the riders are secure in canter, confident on every terrain, capable of riding some considerable distance, able to ride horses with various temperament, and have a steady seat.

Weight limit

Most of the sites fix a maximum weight limit for the riders due to the distance and difficulties of the trips (riders above 90 kilograms are usually allowed for trail riding only if it is previously announced).

Companions

Occasionally non-riding visitors have the opportunity to follow the riding trips on carriages.

Horses

Horses used are chosen and trained especially for trail riding. They are fit and capable of maintaining a fast pace over a variety of terrains. Because of the natural way they are kept their relationship to men is very good. They possess lively temperament, good stamina and are well-trained.

Staff

Sites offering trail rides usually provide guides who speak foreign languages. The riding guides - without exception - are experienced riders with a reliable knowledge of the terrain. During the riding trips trained grooms take care of the horses but visitors can help if they want to.

Riding in a group

We inform our guests about the special rules of the riding trips every time. Visitors should understand that they need to pay attention to special particulars different from the riding school practice that occur during the trip due to the being together of horses and riders (e.g.: they should take into consideration the order of social rank that has previously evolved among the horses).

Terrain and people

The terrain of the trips is extremely favourable. Visitors can ride in an attractive surrounding, on a non-tarmac, good ground and far from the inhabited area all the time.

Many times the route leads through nature reserves and national parks. Hungarians are hospitable and always welcome people travelling on horse-back.

It is suggested to take out an insurance policy back at home, but the quality sites offer possibilities for an insurance in Hungary too.
